"Fake It 'Til You Make It"

I'm sure you've heard the phrase "fake it 'till you make it" but what does that really mean and how can it work for you? File this under the 'confidence' category, it does not mean you should act snooty or above it all, but rather use it as a confidence booster when you're feeling low. I think a lot of people, especially women, have a tendency to downplay their value thinking "oh what do I know I'm not that talented". Rather turn it around and say to yourself "I do know what I'm doing, I was hired for this job for a reason, I am an expert in this subject" It could be large or small, whatever your role is - own it and know that you were hired for a reason.

I once had a great mentor say to me "act the part you want to have" and I thought to myself, that's it that's the secret sauce! You know how some people just have that 'it factor' where they can own any room they walk into? It's because they already believe in their own power, they are already one step ahead anticipating their next role. Own your current role, make it yours and then work on the next level. You don't need an invitation to take on more responsibility or more ownership. Once you act the part you want to have, when an opportunity opens up you'll be first on everyone's mind because they can already see you in that role.
