What are your resolutions?

As we enter the predictable resolution phase of the new year - what are your goals this year? The classic eat healthier, manage finances better, snag that dream job? We all recongize there's always room for self improvement, but the real question is how to get there and what will keep you motivated when the glamour of the new year has fizzled away?

As you write your personal resolutions this year I encourage you to plan out your goals to achieve small milestones over the course of the year. Think about why you really want to achieve these resolutions? Don't do it for someone else, don't do it because it's the new year - do it for yourself. What is the real motivation factor that will keep you going when the going gets tough?

I like to break it down into small goals, acheivable each month. This makes a large resolution feel more manageable and easy to track. Each day on the first of the month make a post-it note reminding yourself of your goal for that month, and focus intently on that one goal. By the end of the year you will have fully acheived 12 resolutions!

Write 3 or 4 simple, tangible steps that you will take to reach your goal and focus each day of that month on achieving them. For example - sleep 8 hours a night, keep a food journal, offer a compliment, maintain good posture, meditate for a few minutes. By focusing on just a few of these goals intently for 4 weeks they become a habit and you are more likely to carry those over into the next month. If you focus on 3 small goals each month that's a total of 36 new positive habits you will have formed by the end of the year! I would say that's a huge improvment rather than trying to tackle a resolution all at once that's too big and feeling defeated.

Wishing you the best in health and happiness in 2016, the year of you!
